Jonathan H. Tzu, MD FACS

Adult Retina Specialist

Dr. Tzu was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He graduated cum laude from Rice University with a Bachelors of Science in biochemistry and Bachelors of Arts in kinesiology, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He then enrolled at the renowned Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he received his medical degree. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Franklin Square Hospital Center in Baltimore, Maryland, and was honored with the Intern of the Year award. Dr. Tzu did his ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, which is ranked as the #1 ophthalmology program in the United States by U.S. News and World Report. Following residency, Dr. Tzu continued at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute for a 2- year vitreoretinal surgical fellowship. During that time, Dr. Tzu trained with some of the most admired vitreoretinal surgeons in the country. He also received the Residents’ award for Fellow Teacher of the Year. During the second year of his fellowship, Dr. Tzu served as Chief Resident and Director of the Ocular Trauma Service. Dr. Tzu has authored several peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on retinal surgery and diseases. He has also presented his research at numerous state wide and national meetings. He has recently served as a reviewer for the journal Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina.

Dr. Tzu is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and American Society of Retina Specialists.

Dr. Tzu’s clinical interest focuses on the medical and surgical treatment of retinal diseases including retinal detachment, ocular trauma, diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and retinal vascular diseases.

On a personal note, Dr. Tzu enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He is an avid basketball fan and is looking forward to another great season by the Houston Rockets.
