Arthur W. Willis, MD FACS

Dr. Willis has been in vitreoretinal practice for the past 40 years. He was born in Englewood, New Jersey, and grew up in the northeastern United States. He obtained an A.B. from Indiana University, and then went on to Indiana University School of Medicine to obtain an M.D. in 1966. Following medical school, he did a rotating internship at the Wilmington Medical Center in Wilmington, Delaware. For the next two years Dr. Willis served as a captain in the United States Air Force serving at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He did a three-year residency in Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, ending in 1972. In the following year he completed a fellowship in diseases and surgery of the vitreous and retina in Houston at Baylor College of Medicine.

He has extensive experience in treating all types of vitreoretinal disease, with special interest in the surgical treatment of macular disease, including macular pucker, macular hole and vitreoretinal traction syndrome. He is a pioneer in the surgical management of macular hole and macular pucker surgery. Dr. Willis is a Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and has published several papers on macular pucker and macular hole surgery. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, and has traveled internationally to both teach and learn the latest techniques in vitreoretinal surgery. He has given over 100 lectures internationally on various subjects involving vitreoretinal disease. Dr. Willis has been married to his wife, Suzanne, for the past 30 years. Suzanne is a previously state and nationally ranked amateur tennis player, and is currently an avid golfer. Dr. and Mrs. Willis have traveled extensively, playing golf in 15 countries.

Dr. Willis’ hobbies include, golf, water skiing, and piloting his Mooney airplane which he uses to fly patients without transportation (Angel Flight) to and from Houston for medical treatment throughout the Texas Medical Center.
